Oh hazy day.

11142013-1 11142013-2

There has been so much sun! Kind of hazy sometimes, a little lower in the sky than I'd like, but sun sure is the flippin' sun and I'm totally okay with it being around more than I expected this time of year. On Tuesday, feeling buoyed after a class presentation that went really well, and greeted by the sunshine when I left the art history department, I thought it high time I made a reprise visit to Calton Hill.

I checked in to the Collective Gallery, a contemporary art pod, but they only had one video piece going and I wasn't super impressed. Meh. So we'll skim over that part, but it's worth the trek to the top for the views. Even on days when it's kind of hazy and glary and difficult to see without watering eyes! I wanted to stop by the construction perimeters on Calton Road that have an ever-changing slew of spray art paintings by street artists--some with particular talent. A post coming soon on that. It changed a lot in the two months since I saw it last.

It's been a very busy, but good week. I've gotten excellent feedback on both an independent presentation for my history of Scottish architecture class, and also the group work I've been involved in with my other class receieved good feedback as well. Internship all day tomorrow. Essay due in three weeks. Lots to do, but it's under control and I feel good about this term overall -- as it stands. :)

Cheers!

Art surprise at St. Mary's Cathedral

Here's an example of a stop made that I didn't anticipate, and hadn't even known about before seeing it rise over the neighboring rows of houses. This would be St. Mary's Cathedral (I want to know how they scored the domain name cathedral.net, just as an aside). It's a Victorian Gothic-style church consecrated in 1879. I was literally the only person in here for about fifteen minutes, until some other tourists appeared, so I took my lazy old time wandering around with the entire place to myself. There was an area in the south transept in which some local artists were displaying their work -- some of it quite good -- beneath the pretty amazing Paolozzi window (pictured below).

Altogether, the cathedral has a simple layout, timber ceiling, and was somewhat dark overall due partly to the color of the stone and the dark timber ceiling, but I enjoyed the stop. So... a few photos. I fear some of the interior are a little less impressive because it was pretty dark and I can't stand using a flash. Bear with me! :)

The Art Garage

I made a promising French spring lamb stew last night and hoped to be able to post about it today, however it was a total disaster. So instead, I'll share just a couple photos of a mini trip to Green Bay to visit The Art Garage, a gallery, studio and classroom space hooked up to the local technical college, where my dad currently has a wall up (see below) and their current show was of travel-themed work by the Green Bay Art Colony. It was a gorgeous day for it!

It used to be an old automotive repair garage, hence the "garage" in the name. I almost liked the architecture more than the items on display, but I did see a few nice things, and it really is a splendid, bright space with an eclectic selection of work and a small gift shop.

Also, in unrelated but arguably more exciting news, I had a pow-wow via Facebook with my two sisters throughout the day yesterday, and we've decided to do a road trip to Glacier National Park at the end of June! How exciting is that. There'll be plenty more where that came from, I can assure you, so stayyy tuuuuned!
